Supply Chain and Product Emissions Minimize

More and more organisations are facing demands from customers wanting evidence of the operational and product emissions profile of their suppliers. No matter how well an organisation is managing its own impacts, if its suppliers and customers are not managing the future challenges of regulation, reporting, diminishing resources and erratic climate on its own operations their ability to supply or purchase goods could be severely affected.

These suppliers and contractors are required to know their carbon footprint (scope 1 emissions) in order to report it to their customers. And in many cases, only the portion of their footprint related to the specific customer they are reporting to. This granularity of detail dramatically increases the complexity of the task of carbon footprint reporting.

To understand the emissions profile of their products and services, many of  these suppliers and contractors will in turn require their own suppliers and contractors to report their footprint thus creating a flow down effect.

Gathering this information in a timely and orderly fashion from across the whole organisation and supply chain will be a complex and labour intensive process, particularly for large organisations. The business needs to understand what to collect and when and provide easy means for submitting and receiving this information. Furthermore:

  • Appropriate systems are required to store the information and comply with various reporting standards such as the GHG Protocol and ISO 14064,
  • provide an audit trail of each emission source for third party verification,
  • share information with trading partners, internal and external stakeholders and ERP systems and
  • evolve with changing requirements encompassing
    • different reporting commitments and timelines,
    • different types of emissions to track,
    • emission factors changing annually
    • and the introduction of future environmental programs
